Every Piece Evolves Differnetly

Moving Thru The Layers

Every painting has a moment where it shifts — from a flat beginning to something with life, depth, and intention. That “next step” is often the most exciting part of the process.

After the base layer is down and the composition is established, it’s time to build dimension. This is where color relationships deepen, shadows begin to anchor the subject, and highlights start to whisper where the light lives.

1. Strengthening the Foundation

Before adding details, I revisit the structure:

  • Are the values balanced?
  • Does the focal point feel clear?
  • Is the movement guiding your eye naturally?

Sometimes this means glazing over areas to soften transitions. Other times, it means boldly redefining edges.

2. Building Depth Through Layers

Layering is where emotion starts to rise to the surface. Transparent glazes can create richness, while thicker, textured strokes bring energy and presence. The contrast between soft blends and confident marks creates visual rhythm.

This stage is less about perfection and more about intention.

3. Refining the Story

Now I ask:

  • What is this painting trying to say?
  • What feeling should linger?

Small adjustments — a sharper highlight, a deeper shadow, a subtle shift in tone — can completely change the narrative.

4. Knowing When to Pause

The hardest part? Not overworking it. A painting often tells you when it’s close. Stepping away, viewing it from a distance, or even turning it upside down can reveal what still needs attention.

Every piece evolves differently, but the next step is always about courage — trusting your eye and letting the painting unfold.

If you’re following along on this journey, stay tuned. The magic is in the layers.

I LOVE the Frieda Kahlo. I’m still studying it. There is so much to see!
